What Have I Learnt So Far:
Coming into BTEC Media I already had past experience in Media GCSE which has given me a foundation of basic knowledge for the subject, which I have always enjoyed. Learning about music videos has allowed me to broaden my expertise and insight of genres in all media sectors, not only within music videos. The word genre is rooted from its definition in French, meaning ‘type’. Genres also can contain sub-genres, which allow the form of media outlet using the sub-genre to appeal to a wider mass audience as it engages an audience who might have a specific liking for one of the genres coming together to form the sub-genre. An example would be horror/thrillers; this is a very common sub-genre used due to the popularity of both genres. Similarly, hybrid genres and synergy’s might also be formed which are the collaboration of two genres coming together to create something new and innovative, e.g. postmodernism.
Furthermore, I have also learnt that each video produced for a music video and each part of it falls under the mise en scene and has a purpose. This can be to either create audience gratification by intertextuality and showing a pastiche (or many other ways). The intention behind all the small and big details in these videos are to create audience gratification and promote visceral effect for the audience, encouraging them to watch it again and again. This way more revenue is created by each view that the music video receives o the form of interactive media it is being watched on.
Another thing I have learnt is the representation created in music videos, this can be of men and women or even of a place and location. When looking at the representation of men and women in music videos the male and female gaze can be applied. However, representation is also the understanding of what is real and what is represented in a certain way to create a persona or stereotype over something.
